Midjourney built its reputation on one thing: images that look good — not just accurate to the prompt, but genuinely beautiful. Years in, that's still its edge. We've used it for cover art, marketing visuals and concept work, and for pure aesthetic quality it remains the tool to beat.

Pros

  • Best aesthetic quality in the industry
  • Powerful style control, references and personalization
  • Web editor with inpainting, upscaling and variations
  • Strong community and shared prompt culture
  • Fast generation on paid plans

Cons

  • No free tier
  • Text rendering inside images still trails competitors
  • Learning curve for advanced prompt control
  • Public images on cheaper plans (stealth mode costs more)

What it's like to use

Midjourney has long since outgrown its Discord origins — the website is now a full creative workspace with generation, editing, organizing and exploring other users' public work. You describe the image, optionally attach style or character references, and iterate through variations. The iteration loop is where Midjourney shines: getting from a rough idea to a polished final image is faster here than anywhere else.

Quality vs the competition

DALL-E inside ChatGPT is more convenient and better at following literal instructions and rendering text. Ideogram is stronger for typography. But put finished images side by side and Midjourney's lighting, composition and texture win most blind comparisons. For anything customer-facing — album covers, hero images, ads — that gap matters.

Pricing

Plans start at $10/month for the Basic tier with limited fast generations. The $30/month Standard plan adds unlimited relaxed generation, which is the practical choice for regular users. There's no meaningful free tier, so budget-conscious beginners may want to start with DALL-E via a ChatGPT subscription they already have.
