Perplexity's pitch is simple: an answer engine instead of a link engine. Ask a question, get a direct written answer with numbered citations to real sources you can click and verify. For research tasks — comparing products, checking claims, gathering current information — it has genuinely replaced Google for a lot of our work.

Pros

  • Every claim is cited — easy to verify
  • Excellent for current events and fresh information
  • Deep Research mode produces sourced reports
  • Focus modes (academic, video, social) narrow the search
  • Generous free tier

Cons

  • Writing and creative ability trail ChatGPT and Claude
  • Citations can occasionally misrepresent a source — still verify
  • Pro needed for the best models and heavy Deep Research use

How it's different from ChatGPT

ChatGPT can search the web; Perplexity is built around searching the web. Every answer starts from live sources, and the interface is designed for follow-up questions, related queries and source-checking. For "what's the best X in 2026" or "is this claim true" questions, Perplexity's answers are consistently fresher and easier to verify.

Deep Research

Give it a meaty question — "compare the pricing models of the top email marketing platforms" — and Deep Research runs dozens of searches, reads the sources, and assembles a structured report with citations. It's not a PhD analyst, but as a 10-minute head start on hours of manual research, it's excellent.

Pricing

The free tier includes unlimited basic searches and a taste of the advanced features — genuinely usable. Pro at $20/month unlocks the strongest models, far more advanced searches and heavy Deep Research use. Researchers, analysts, students and content creators are the natural Pro customers.

Frequently asked questions

Is Perplexity free?

Yes — unlimited basic searches free, with Pro at $20/month for advanced models and heavy research use.

Is Perplexity better than Google?

For direct answers to research questions, usually yes. For navigation, shopping and local queries, Google still wins.

Can I trust Perplexity's citations?

They're real sources, but spot-check important claims — the summary occasionally flattens nuance from the original.
